The Parenting Tweens and Teens workshop will support parents by targeting personal effectiveness in communication skills to enhance your relationship with your child. You will explore the origins of your communication style, better understand the communication styles used by others and develop personal communication skills. You will learn how to talk so they will listen!
You will gain a better understanding of your approach to the relationship, and specifically to communication with your adolescent. The workshop will enable you to develop valuable strategies and tools to become more effective in your communication, fostering a stronger relationship with your pre-teen or teen.
This workshop is relevant for parents of adolescents from the age of 10 which is when communication difficulties commonly begin and a new approach is needed. The skills you will learn will be appropriate throughout the teenage years.
Over four weeks, you'll be able to try out the strategies learnt in the workshop at home, and bring back feedback for further discussion and support.
You will learn:
- Self-awareness: understanding who you are and how you came to be at this point
- To communicate more effectively
- To better understand your teen
- Active listening skills
- Regulation of your emotions and how to help your tween or teen manage their own
- Conflict resolution and problem-solving
- Practical tools and strategies
Investing a few hours now, will create a valuable roadmap for navigating those challenging teen years.

Belinda Irvin has been conducting communication programs for over 10 years with much positive long term sustainable change for participants. She has a background in Social Science (Community Work), a Masters of Counselling degree and her earlier professional life was spent in Nursing and Midwifery. Belinda has also been a sessional lecturer at the University of the Sunshine Coast. She has a wide range of experience working alongside families during significant life transition periods. A special interest is communication skill development and its vital importance in all relationships including parenting, spousal, conflict resolution and general connection to the wider community.
$240 per person ($215 concession)

Acceptance into this program is subject to minimum enrolment numbers being achieved and/or maximum numbers being reached. Heartlinks reserves the right to discontinue service should the facilitator deem a participant to be better suited to an alternative form of support.
